شالي (Shali)
Series of photographs produced in Siwa around the Shali, an ancient fortress dating back to the 12th century, built in kershef, a local building technique using a mixture of earth, salt and pebbles. The complexe which ressembles a labyrinth stands in the center of the oasis as one of its main landmark and was partially destroyed during an episode of heavy rain in 1924. The Shali is still being partially and discreetly occupied by a few families. The Egyptian government had just finished to renovate the fortress in order to boost tourism in the Siwa oasis that it entends to develop and open to mass tourism.
